This is such a weird time in the world right now and we are all just trying to figure out what the future looks like for all of us. It is a scary time and I'm doing my best to stay positive. I'm trying to see this time stuck at home as a blessing. I think we could all use this time in a ton of different ways obviously but wouldn't it be nice to start enjoying the little things in life again that we may have taken for granted. Like a beautiful sunny day or an evening family walk or laying a blanket out in the grass and reading a book in the afternoon. We have chosen to tackle a few things around our new house that we knew we wanted to do eventually but not sure when a weekend would free up to get it done.
With life essentially on hold, we started going around the house and hanging things and getting little things done and organized. One of the things we did was finally put the finishing touches on our Laundry room. That may sound silly to some of you...like what did you have to do to your laundry room? But at our last house my laundry room was essentially in a closet. It was SO TINY and had no storage space, no windows, no nothing..it was DULL.
So when we sat down to design our new house, one of my top priorities was a functional laundry room. I wanted a sink or washtub to soak clothes because sometimes I will soak something for days to get a stain out (hello toddler stains). I wanted a counter for folding so I could keep all the laundry...in the laundry room, shelves and ALL. THE. STORAGE. And (honestly) most importantly I wanted it to be a space that I liked to be in. Why can't a laundry room be pretty and functional? After all, if I'm going to spend a ton of time in this room why not make it a little unique and fun?
It started with the tile. I knew I wanted to do something really FUN and different. So the interior designer we worked with during the building process and I brainstormed on what we could do that would stand out. When she showed me this super rustic tile that was made to look like it was really old, I immediately said yes absolutely. She had never had a client use it before so that made me like it even more because it was bold and different. It came in a variation of colors and finishes and you will find this tile all throughout my house in different colors that's how much I fell in love with it. We came up with this striped pattern using the darkest and lightest color it came in. The day our tile was installed I was so giddy I couldn't wait to see it come to life and it did not disappoint. Seeing it sketched was one thing but seeing it in real life it exceeded my expectations. I love it so much and whenever someone comes over one of the first things I want to show them is my laundry room floor.
My dad is a very talented carpenter and I grew up around him creating really really cool freaking stuff. He specializes in cabinets and some of the kitchens he has created are some of the most luxurious in the country. I have to brag on him because he really is that talented. Because I grew up around it and seeing all his work, I think that's where my love for home design comes from. All throughout my parents house you will find handmade pieces by my dad that would sell for $$$$. I am trying to convince him to sell some of his more unique pieces like hutches, console tables, wine cabinets and buffet tables. Anyway, last time he came for a visit him and I sat down and designed the counter top and cubbies for the laundry room. The designing process took longer than the actual building of it, he and Braden built it in a day. I love the butcher block SO MUCH. I painted the cubbies white to really make the butcher block pop. In the future we might add a vanity with a different sink but I'm really loving the industrial washtub right now. I am never worried about messing it up. It's a great place to clean our dogs bowls and clean paint brushes etc.
From the water hyacinth baskets and the fun light fixture, I really had fun designing this room and all the little details we put in it. I am so happy with this little laundry room oasis I have. It really is a space I LIKE to be in if you can believe that. Who likes to be in their laundry room? ME!
What projects are you guys working on or finishing up during the time at home?
